However, despite the fact that most people know this, there are still far too many who fail to put it into practice.

When you list your home for sale, you want it to command the highest possible price. You want to make the most out of the transaction, and finding a qualified buyer who is willing to meet your asking price is the ultimate form of success.

In order to make sure that your listing finds that level of success, you need to make sure that every qualified buyer who looks at your house falls in love with it at first sight.

That means paying detailed attention to your home’s curb appeal.

Here are five basic areas to focus on to improve your home’s curb appeal:


There are not many things in this world that can match the return on investment of a gallon of the right color paint used in the right places. Applying a fresh coat of paint is a very cost effective way to immediately boost your house’s curb appeal.

Painting the entire house might be a little too much for you to take on, but painting areas like the front door, porch railings, window trim, and shutters can help a house look decades younger in as little as a few hours.

When choosing paint colors, make sure to stick to basic neutral tones. The goal is to make the house appealing to as many different buyers as possible, so don’t limit your options with wild color choices.


Attending to the landscaping around your house might require a bit more money and effort than painting, but it can have an even bigger impact on the home’s curb appeal.

The starting point with your landscaping should be to make sure that all of your shrubs, bushes, and trees are healthy and properly trimmed. If your landscaping beds are covered with mulch or rocks, you might want to evaluate whether they need to be freshened up with additional layers.

Once again, the goal here is to make your house appealing to as many people as possible. Less is more when it comes to bushes and shrubs, so don’t be afraid to remove things if your landscaping is overcrowded.


If there is any cement work around the house, you will want to make sure it is in perfect condition. You might not get credit from buyers for having a flawlessly poured sidewalk or driveway, but any cracks or crumbling steps will be an immediate turn off.

If your cement work needs more attention than that, it will probably be worth the investment to hire a professional to fix it as soon as possible. This will be money well spent when you sell your house for maximum value.


One area of curb appeal that everyone notices without actually realizing it is the mailbox.

The goal here is not necessarily to have the best mailbox in the neighborhood, but you want to make sure that you don’t have the worst. If that means running down to your home improvement store and spending a Saturday putting in a new one, it will be well worth the effort.

Just like every other aspect of curb appeal, you want to choose a mailbox that appeals to the largest number of people. Some communities have standards requiring all mailboxes to be of certain specifications, and if that’s the case, make sure yours is up to snuff.

Otherwise, sticking to neutral colors will be your best bet here. You simply want it to look nice and not stick out like a sore thumb. Oh, and skip the one with your favorite football team or college logo.

House Number

When was the last time you actually looked at your house number? It’s probably been a while. That’s because you already know where you live. But every single person that finds your listing on the Internet is going to be looking for that number to find your house.

If the house number is the first thing that many potential buyers are going to be looking for when they drive past your house, you better make sure that those numbers look good and are easy to find.
