How to Fall in Love With Your House All Over Again

Posted by Dixie Courtney on February 13, 2016 at 9:18 AM

It’s easy to fall in love with a house you find online that’s bigger, fancier, and way more expensive than the one you currently live in. We all do it.

Just like those DIY shows on TV convince us that a complete remodel of our kitchen is the key to making our house more luxurious, we can all fall prey to the idea of “moving on up” like George and Weezie.

So let’s talk about how you can make some choices to intentionally appreciate your current home more, instead of daydreaming about those spectacular houses that you might never actually be able to afford.

Here are some of our favorite ways to fall back in love with your current home.

Change Your Perspective

People are creatures of habit, and you have almost certainly fallen into some type of habits with regard to your current home. One of the easiest ways to change the way you feel about your current house is to change the perspective with which you view that house.

Try to think of and experience your home as if it was listed on the MLS right next to the other houses you’ve been looking at.

What highlights (that you’ve gotten used to over the years) would catch your eye if you were in the market for that type of home?

Take a Walk Down Memory Lane

Speaking of what might catch your eye, take some time to reminisce about what it was that caught your eye the very first time you walked through your home.

Focusing on whatever it was that originally sold you on making this your home will help you remember to appreciate those things when your mind starts to stray.

Rearrange the Furniture

You don’t have to do this throughout the entire house, but rearranging the furniture in even one room of your current home can give it a whole new look and feel.

Often times this can be enough to help you better appreciate the space you already have.

Brighten Up Your Favorite Spaces

Another physical solution to help you fall in love with your current home is to focus on the spaces that are already your favorites and find ways to brighten them up.

Whether you go with brighter wall colors or new light fixtures, making your favorite spots in the house even more appealing is a sure way to reinforce how great the house is for your family.

Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

If you decide that you need to pull out the big guns and really work hard to convince yourself that your house is worth falling in love with, you might have to push yourself outside your comfort zone.

Try decorating a room in a style that is completely different than your normal style and you might find yourself taking on a whole new opinion about the space.

The next time you find yourself caught up in a whirlwind of envy for other houses, implement some of these ideas and remind yourself about the great features your current home has to offer.

They just might help you fall back in love with your current home!
