The start of a new year represents a wealth of opportunity to start and achieve anything you set your mind to. As we say goodbye to 2015 and ring in 2016, many of us will spend the next few weeks talking about our New Year’s Resolutions.
If one of your resolutions for the coming year is to sell your house, then using the fresh calendar as motivation is a great way to push yourself towards completing all of those little detail projects you have been putting off around the house.
To make sure you start out the coming year on the right foot, here are some common tasks that you might have been putting off.
Paint the Rooms That Need Painting
You know that one room that hasn’t been painted in years? The one that you can pretty much forget about because you don’t go in there very often? Anyone interested in buying your house is going to be looking in there, so make sure you get it dressed up with a fresh coat of paint.
It should also go without saying that this is a great time to get around to patching those holes in the wall that you hung a picture to cover up a few years back.
Repair the Trim Your Dog Chewed
Even if it wasn’t the dog’s fault, we all have spots in our homes where the trim has been damaged over the years. Use the New Year as your motivation to get on top of fixing that!
The idea of sanding the existing trim or cutting new trim to fit might seem daunting, but these are the small details that will make the difference in selling your house quickly for your full asking price.
Fix That One Door That Doesn’t Close Right
It might be the door that goes out to the garage or that one in the basement that you don’t use a whole lot, but anyone thinking about buying your house will be opening and closing all of the doors as they walk through it.
Fixing a door that is just a bit off is actually a pretty simple job. Just watch a few YouTube videos and you’ll have that door lined up in no time flat. And if it happens to be a door you use yourself, you’ll get the bonus of enjoying its new functionality for the rest of your time in the house.
Get Around to Renting That Floor Scrubber
Remember how nice all the carpets looked the last time you rented a floor scrubber and spent the weekend cleaning them with wet socks? It’s been a while, hasn’t it?
Cleaning the carpets (or hiring someone else to do it) can make a huge difference in your home’s appearance, and is a must-do if you plan on listing your home soon.
Organize That Basement Disaster Area
Everyone can understand having that one place downstairs where everything you don’t really want seems to end up. And no one ever wants to take the initiative to clean it up and get rid of the junk.
But your real estate agent is going to tell you to take care of that mess the minute you start talking about listing your home, so you might as well get on it now while you have some New Year’s motivation.
Replace That Outdated Light Fixture
You know that one light fixture that you hate? Put yourself in the shoes of a potential buyer. Would they hate it too?
If the answer is yes, then swapping it out with a new one is a no brainer to make your New Year’s Resolution list! New light fixtures can make a dramatic difference without costing you a fortune.
Either Hang Those Pictures or Get Rid of Them
Another common project that gets put off over and over again is hanging those pictures frames or artwork that you bought for that one wall in the fancy room you don’t sit in all that much. If your house is like most, the pictures are sitting on the floor right below where they are supposed to be hanging.
If you want to sell your house this year, you’ve got two options: either hang them up or get rid of them. You can’t let them sit there any longer.
Of course, one of the biggest flaws of many New Year’s Resolutions is that most of us quit thinking about them by the middle of February. But if your goal is to sell your house this year, you just need a little extra push to get started and the goal of selling should take care of the rest!
Good Luck and Happy New Year!
